The photos and history of this fire department are incredible.Welcome to the Laurel-Rex Firehouse page! This page is an unofficial page that is run by current and retired members of the York City Department of Fire Rescue with a common objective of sharing daily life, our great history, and connecting with our friends and neighbors with one of the oldest firehouses in the nation!
A little history about us:
The Laurel Fire Company, dates back to January of 1771 when a group of 24 citizens banded together and formed the Sun Fire Brigade of York Town. After many years of service, and in 1777 while the continental congress was in session in York, an appropriation of $50.00, continental currency, be granted to the fire company of York town which has a laurel wreath design painted on its fire wagon." The Sun Fire Brigade eventually changed its name to the Laurel Fire Company.
After many years and a few different stations(we will post more about this) the Laurel Fire Company laid the corner stone of their current firehouse in July of 1877!
The Rex Hook and Ladder dates back to 1886 when a group of firemen banded together to discuss forming a ladder company. In 1892 the Rex Hook Ladder moved into their station which is connected to the Laurel.
