Community Risk Reduction Event at Latino Hispanic American Fair is a Hit with Kids and Parents

The Allison sponsored a  Fire Prevention and Community Risk Reduction safety education event aimed at children in our neighborhood  Saturday September 18 during the Latino Hispanic American Fair, on Derry Street.

Doug DeHaven describes how a smoke alarm works

Our friend Doug DeHaven, a public fire safety educator and retired Fire Marshal from Hagerstown MD FD was on hand to interact with the kids and answer questions from the public on how to make their homes safer. The event was in cooperation with Chief Brian Enterline and the Harrisburg Bureau of Fire. It was staffed 100% by Allison volunteers and friends. The Harrisburg Volunteer Firemen’s Relief Association provided materials through the fire chief’s office.

Kids imaginations help them learn about going low in smoke

Upon returning to active status in the Bureau of Fire, the Allison pledged that in addition to having active firefighters, a Community Risk Reduction Program would be established. This was our first event.

Funding for the program was provided by PA State Fire Commissioner’s Fire Department Grant Program. Harrisburg Volunteer Firemen’s Relief Association provided materials through the fire chief’s office. Assistance with the fire safety education program was provided by the Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firemen’s Association (CVVFA) of which the Allison is a member. Doug DeHaven is the Second VP of the CVVFA.

Kids and Fire Trucks. Could we have a new recruit in the making?

Kids got a free ice cream treat after the lesson and a chance to get their face painted.
